Abstract

"Heat & Life: The Science of Animal Thermoregulation" investigates the dynamic and mechanism of animal thermoregulation. Offering a perspective view of various research on how animals adapt to their environmental temperature, this book combines multidisciplinary information from physiology, ecology, evolution, and climate research.

The book starts by focusing on the fundamentals of animal thermoregulation in animal survival, behavior, and physiology. From findings of animal heat tolerance to contemporary developments using infrared thermography and metabolic assessments, it demonstrates the historical evolution of thermoregulation research. With some species showing specific thermoregulation mechanisms by changing or maintaining body temperature at sites or across different times, it offers insights into several thermoregulatory strategies across species, from endotherms producing internal heat to ectotherms depending on outside sources.

The book emphasizes the influence of animal thermoregulation and explores the physiological processes of heat transfer, including conduction, convection, radiation, and evaporation. It also tries to explain the complicated relationships between the brain, endocrine system, and metabolic processes sustaining thermal homeostasis, paying special attention to the hypothalamus and neural routes regulating body temperature.

The study also examines how animals use behavioral thermoregulation, such as habitat selection, postural changes, and social thermoregulation, to prevent high temperatures. It investigates the adaptation tactics used by cold and heat-adapted organisms and how these behaviors are vital for survival, reproduction, and energy conservation.
The book presents, in relation to climate change, the relevance of thermoregulation from the animal biodiversity perspective. Rising global temperatures create additional difficulties for animals trying to maintain thermal balance, which may influence animal distribution, behavior, and even physiological characteristics. The book helps to demonstrate how the the consequences of environmental changes by means of knowledge of these adaptive reactions to animal survival.

"Heat & Life: The Science of Animal Thermoregulation" is useful for academics, students, and everybody interested in the rich history of the interaction between animals and their thermal environments. It combines historical viewpoints, contemporary studies, and useful applications.
